Note for non-human service organizations: While this framework was developed and tested for human service organizations, we've effectively used this in our "#KeepWestchesterThriving" campaign to embrace the entire nonprofit sector.

Presenter: Bridget Gavaghan, Consultant, National Reframing Initiative

Everyone should have the opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute to their community.  Yet the health and human services sector is experiencing deep funding cuts and flat charitable giving that leave organizations ill-equipped to address the complex issues facing their communities.  The important work of human services is simply not resonating with the public.

The National Human Services Assembly’s Reframing Initiative seeks to change that by building public understanding of the sector to encourage more vibrant civic participation and deepen support for effective programs. As part of this multi-year research project, the Assembly engaged the Frameworks Institute, a renowned nonprofit communications firm, to conduct research on the sector’s current communications strategies and develop an evidence-based strategy for reframing the work of the sector.

In this workshop, you will hear the findings from this groundbreaking research and learn how to help lead efforts to create a cohesive voice for human services.  We will also do hands-on activities so you become familiar with using a new and robust set of online tools. You will leave the session better equipped to integrate a new narrative into your communications strategies.

Suggested Advance Preparation

Talking Human Services: A Frameworks Message Memo.  The foundational document for this initiative, it synthesizes the research that informed the development of the new frame and offers recommendations for the human services field to utilize the frame and more effectively communicate the scope and value of their work.

Building a New Narrative on Human Services Toolkit.  The toolkit is a practical guide for reframing that includes examples of how traditionally framed messages can be reframed using the new narrative and frame elements.  There are FAQs, message cards, example Op-Eds and other tips for integrating the new frame.
