Every year, Westchester County sets priorities through the budget it adopts by deciding what to pay for and how to pay for it. These decisions help shape the kind of community Westchester becomes, yet they are made without public discussion about what those priorities might be. The Keep Westchester Thriving Coalition believes that this neglected public priority setting is an essential phase of the budget-making process. The budget should be an expression of the articulated values and priorities of our community and support progress for all.
Typically, public input on the budget is limited to three public hearings held in late November and December, very late in the budget process. This forum, which will be moderated by Laura Rossi, Esq., Executive Director of the Westchester Community Foundation, is being organized to maximize the exchange of ideas and to facilitate the contributions of many participants to this vision.
Rather than a traditional panel discussion, which is structured around presentations, our forum will be in the form of a “fishbowl discussion,” which is highly interactive, and is designed to foster discussion, dialogue and understanding among participants and audience members. There will be three rounds of discussion among representatives of various community sectors, followed by brief responses from elected officials.
This event is being organized by the Keep Westchester Thriving Coalition, which is comprised of the following member organizations:
Campaign for Kids
Child Care Council of Westchester
Community Voices Heard
Federated Conservationists of Westchester County
Interfaith Clergy for Social Action
New York Immigration Coalition
