Study By Johns Hopkins Demonstrates Major Role Nonprofits Play in Westchester's Economy

Westchester County's nonprofit sector plays a critical economic role as both a job creator and revenue generator. The sector is not only the largest employer among all industries in Westchester County, employing nearly 54,000 people, but has contributed significantly to the county's private employment growth over the past decade despite the recent recession. In addition, the Westchester nonprofit sector has a considerable financial footprint in the county. Demonstrating this, as of 2011, Westchester nonprofits:

  • Generated nearly $6.9 billion in revenues.
  • Spent nearly $6.6 billion.
  • Held over $8.4 billion in total assets.
Nonprofits are a prime contributor to the quality of life in Westchester - arts, education, health care, the environment, housing and services for children and adults. Nonprofits also are critical to business success, since they provide supportive services to employees and their family members that enable employees to be productive while at work. They also provide a wide range of recreational opportunities that encourage people to want to live in Westchester.
